I was in Mariehamn for about twelve hours in March 2005 when I went by ferry from Finland to the Baltics, by way of Aland. Aland is an autonomous part of Finland. The people speak Swedish and the place seems much more like Sweden than Finland. It used to be a reasonably important shipping center. The buses in Aland are free although I didn’t ride any while I was there. The ferry I took in April 2005 stopped in Aland on the way but I was sleeping at the time.

Passport control, I like to get pictures of passport control since you aren’t supposed to take them. Rather silly. I was really looking forward to the Aland stamp and was disappointed it said FIN, of course it is the same with the Faroe Islands and Denmark. March 2005. |
