While I was living in Saudi Arabia I was only a short drive from Bahrain. I went there a few times between January and June 2008. It was a nice break from Saudi Arabia. Bahrain is similar in some ways to the rest of the Gulf region but it is more laid back. There is an incredible amount of construction going on and it is another bit of Arab desert. Also men and women can talk openly in public and women can drive cars and enjoy other freedoms that aren't possible just over the bridge in Saudi Arabia. Bahrain is an out of the way country but it is a nice place for a break.
