I passed quickly through Bulgaria by train in May 2005. On the whole it struck me as being very poor, similar to but more industrialized than Bosnia. In January 2009 I was back in Bulgaria, once again for a short stay but at least I stopped in Sofia for a few days. It was nice to come to the same spot where I passed through in summer 2005. Not so much had changed after 3.5 years but I see it differently. I'm more used to many different parts of the world. Also it was bitter cold to be there in the winter. The snow was heavy on the ground and my shoes weren't keeping out the wet.

I saw towers like this all over South Eastern Europe. I thought about them a bit and my rather romantic conclusion is that they are fortification towers from the Turkish days, some of them looked much older than this you see. But maybe they are just water towers or something. If anyone who stops by does know what they are then please enlighten me. May 2005. After seeing many more of these in different places and asking about them I can now say they are in fact water towers. |
